The Next Chapter

As some of you may or may not know I've now finished my second year at university and I have began my next adventure in London. It feels kinda surreal to say that I will be spending the next year of my life in a completely new city, totally different to my hometown Norwich and a slight upgrade from Nottingham, but its safe to say I'm very excited. Today's post is going to be a round up of my second year at university and any advice I would give those of you applying for placement as part of your degree.

My second year at university seemed to go past in one huge blur, full of good memories and making even more great friends, second year was certainly one to remember. As part of my degree I have the option to apply for a business placement for a year before moving on to my third and final year of studying. In December 2016 I was lucky enough to secure my business placement year at Debenhams head office. The whole experience was surreal and I honestly couldn't believe I had managed to secure my place working in such a competitive industry. My three key pieces of advice when applying for a placement would be Prepare, Smile, but most importantly Be Yourself

Prepare- Make sure you have research the company, role and industry that you are applying for comprehensively. It is important you do this to show your interviewer that you are commercially aware of its competitors as a business but also that you have a desire to work for them.

Smile- This may seem like a silly piece of advice but honestly, your facial expressions and body language in interviews tell the interviewer a lot about you. Trust me when I say you will be nervous, and that is completely normal, however don't let your nerves get the better of you. Instead use them to your advantage and turn them into positive energy instead of letting them take control.

Be Yourself- Now this is the most important thing to do as your personality may help you stand out from the crowd. There is no need to try and act like someone or something you're not, just answer the questions honestly and add your own personality into the mix to prove to the interviewer why they should give you the opportunity to work for them.

I had no clue how competitive applying for placement would be until I was in the situation myself. It was difficult and took a lot of preparation but even after only a week in my new job, I know all my hard work was worth it in the end. The experience is such a great way to jump head first into the industry and understand how every person plays their part in running the business successfully. I cannot wait to see what the next year holds and the amazing opportunities I will have the chance to experience whilst working for Debenhams.

So as of now, for the next year I will be living and working in the capital, which is definitely something I never thought I would actually have the chance to do. I have plenty of places that I want to visit on my list whilst living here and I plan to take you all along on that journey. My post schedule will probably stick at one to two posts a week for the coming months as I begin to settle in to my new life but I'm excited to share with you what exciting things I get up to.

Let me know of any places in London you think I should check out in the comments below.
